interesting, there’s certainly a celebrity on the list:
| NAME OF CONTRIBUTOR | PAYMENT TYPE | CITY | STATE/ZIP | |
| HAROLD SIMMONS | MONETARY | DALLAS | TX/75240 | |
| ID NUMBER | EMPLOYER | OCCUPATION | ||
| CONTRAN | CEO | |||
| AMOUNT | TRANS. DATE | FILED_DATE | TRANS # | |
| $1,000.00 | 5/17/2008 | 5/22/2008 | 1335013-INC1063 | |
Harold Simmons helped George Bush’s 2004 inaugural ball with a $100,000 donation, also helped boost Mr. Bush’s re-election with $3 million to Swift Vets and POWs for Truth.
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (SBVT) characterized itself as a non-partisan group both in the legal sense and in spirit, yet several prominent individuals who assisted SBVT also have had close ties to the Republican Party. According to information released by the IRS on February 22, 2005, more than half of the group’s reported contributions came from just three sources, all prominent Texas Republican donors: Houston builder Bob J. Perry, a longtime supporter of George W. Bush, donated $4.45 million, Harold Simmons’ Contrans donated $3 million. Perhaps Mr. Simmons is keeping his foot in the door just in case any swift-boating is necessary here locally? What do you think?
I would not say these were the best of company. I guess there is more that lies beneath.
There are also quite a few other donators:
Peter Starrett (seems to owner/direct many of the big stores and some that look small), Susan Groff (who is somewhere between homemaker and Northwest Excavating Company and as many addresses to boot), Howard Groff (gosh there are lots of Groffs in Northridge and they really want Republicans elected, as long as they are breathing).
Actually when looking over the campaign money it is quickly apparent, without delving deeper, that there is so much money in the hands of the very few. There is so much money in donations coming folks that do not even live in the area trying to elect someone that would be owing to them. Just consider what that means to working families, the middle class, and the future. If only those with money or corporations control the elected officials, where is the representation? Will these folks care about the cost of health care, driving to work, a living wage? I seriously doubt it.
At Strickland’s campaign site, he boasts Elton Gallegly’s endorsement. Wow, that wasn’t a surprise.
