Bhutto’s Cause of Death: A Mystery

The bottom line is

  • Bhutto was assassinated.
  • The Pakistan government certainly can’t say that she died accidentally from hitting her head, as the assassin was targeting one of her aides.
  • Security was bad, and without question, was the fault of the government.
  • Bhutto should never have had her head sticking out of the sunroof.
  • Javed Iqbal Cheema, Pakistan’s interior ministry spokesman, sounds like Baghdad Bob.

Baitullah behind Benazir’s assassination: Cheema
ISLAMABAD, Dec 28 (APP): Interior Ministry spokesman Brig ® Javed Iqbal Cheema Friday said that Al-Qaeda operative Baitullah Mehsud was behind the assassination of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto. Addressing at a press conference here he said, “We have recorded a telephone call of Baitullah Mehsud in which he congratulated a cleric for killing Benazir Bhutto.” He said late Benazir was on the hit list of Al-Qaeda and she was receiving life threats from the same group since her arrival in Pakistan. Cheema said, Baitullah Mehsud was also involved in suicide attack on Benazir in Karachi on October 18 and she was sensitized in this regard.
“We also sensitize party leadership about live threats she was facing,” Cheema said adding, “unfortunately political parties did not heed to our code of conduct prepared for holding election campaigns.”
The spokesman said, “We also sensitize the party leadership when Benazir came out from the sun-roof of her vehicle for waving to her party supporters.”
He said according to medical report submitted to the Interior Ministry Benazir died due to fatal fracture in her skull caused by an iron lock of sun-roof of her vehicle.
He said when suicide bomber blew himself up Benazir fell inside her vehicle due to explosion’s pressure and when she was falling in, her head struck the iron lock causing her death

From NDTV New Dehli:

Sherry Rehman, a close aide of Benazir said that she had seen the bullet wounds on Benazir’s body. She also alleged that the government was trying to hush up the issue.

”I was actually part of the party which bathed her body before the funeral,” said Rehman, who added that her car was used to transport Bhutto to hospital.

There was a bullet wound I saw that went in from the back of her head and came out the other side. We could not even wash her properly because the wound was still seeping.
”The hospital was made to change its statement. They never gave a proper report,” she said.
”I believe the interior ministry is saying that she died from some concussion that may have taken place against the sunroof,” she said.
Even, the government appointed security chief to Benazir told NDTV that he does not believe in the government’s explanation and that it must explain the security lapses that led to her death.

12-30-07 Update: New video released today, and from a different perspective, would seem to support this statement from Bhutto’s aide.

Also see AlertNet for Rehman comments which also includes:

Rehman did not see the attacker, and was looking the other way just prior to the attack as she and a colleague suddenly noticed they were surrounded by unfamiliar faces. “We were seeing people who were unfamiliar suddenly wearing Bhutto badges,” she said.

Bhutto’s son, Bilawal Bhutto (19), is said by the TimesOnline Sunday, to be stepping into her place temporarily in an effort to calm violence. It may be that Bhutto’s husband will play a key role while Bilawal completes his education.

“Bilawal is expected to play a leading role in the campaign for elections, still scheduled for January 8 despite the riots that have followed the assassination. But he will return to his studies at Christ Church early next year. Under Pakistani law, parliamentary candidates must be at least 25 years old.”
