Is The Iraq Surge Working?

The government suggests that it is.  In truth, this has been the deadliest year for our troops, 899 souls lost.

Bradley Brooks, AP writer, reports that:

“Two critical shifts that boosted U.S.-led forces in 2007 — a self-imposed cease-fire by a main Shiite militia and a grassroots Sunni revolt against extremists.”

It appears that the current administration is trying to claim credit, however the Shiite self-imposed cease-fire and the Sunni revolt against extremists may not hold if the Iraqi government is not able to gain support for unifying the nation. Additionally, folks leaving the cities may be changing diversity of political beliefs. In an area that does not support separation of church and state and a long history of tribal factions, the lessening in violence may be impossible to sustain.
